The MMA Mental Hall of Fame

Well this is a post that I just had to come out of hiatus to make. It seems that someone has done what needed to be done and collected all of the mental case kingpins of MMA and thrown them into one big asylum:

The MMA MENTAL HALL OF FAME

All of the classic offenders are in there: Joe Son, Datsik, Kimo... And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Enjoy!

David Loiseau vs. Jeremy Horn

In the following match, we see two notable middleweights collide when Jeremy Horn squares off against David Loiseau. In this case, the video quality is poor and is also punctuated by some drunken fan commentary. However, the fight is short enough that it doesn't really matter.

Boxing: Andrew Golota vs. Lamon Brewster

This is pretty much the fight that put the low-blowing Andrew Golota down for the count. This was his third consecutive heavyweight title shot, and nobody was in a rush to give him another one after this performance.

Randy Couture: Meth PSA

Randy Couture gives some straight talk about crystal meth. I was going to make some snide comments about the acting in the PSA re-enactments as compared to Scorpion King 2 but nah... Randy's doing a good thing.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Fabricio Werdum I

This is the first matchup (in Jungle Fight) between Gabriel Gonzaga and Fabricio Werdum. It provided the hype and rationale for their rematch later in the UFC as heavyweight contenders.

Anderson Silva vs. Tony Fryklund

In this matchup from Cage Rage 16, "The Spider" Anderson Silva takes on Tony Fryklund. It is another example of Anderson Silva building his skills and experience in his pre-UFC career to the point where he would become one of the most dominant champions in MMA history.

In this instance, we get to witness one of the most unique knockout finishes of all time. In the UFC tale of the tape, when Joe Rogan and company refer to Anderson Silva's "creative striking," this is undoubtedly one of the moves that inspires that comment.

GIF: Brandon Vera vs. Keith Jardine Knee Strike

Here is a closer look at the kick that buckled Keith Jardine's knee in the fight against Brandon Vera.

It's been the cause for much discussion since the fight occurred, given that strikes intended to hyperextend a joint (and the knee in particular) have a particularly high likelihood of causing ligament damage, long layoffs, and potentially the end of a career.

There is some debate about whether such strikes are legal. They are not specifically named in the fouls listed on the UFC website and there was no call made or warning given. As such, it appears that they are a legal tactic.

However, if they end up being used with any regularity in UFC matches, the organization may want to revisit the desirability of such strikes as their name talent begins to pile up in the knee rehab ward.

GIF: Keith Jardine Nipple Tweak... WTF?

Seriously, don't ask me what is up with this new trend in MMA entrances. I guess whatever gets you stoked for your fight, but this is actually making me miss stuff I used to think was stupid like Kendall Grove's Hannibal Lecter mask...

Oh well, at least the Dean of Mean and Rashad Evans have a sense of humor.
